My family is a "rental car family". We usually shop around for the best deal and rent at the airport for the duration of our trip. We don't have to deal with buses or limitations on our travel in Central Florida this way. If you shop around, you can get some great deals. We like Dollar car rentals. I will tell you, a few years ago, we rented a car at the airport (and were upgraded to a small SUV upon check in) for $250 dollars for nearly three weeks. It pays to research car rental places and pick up locations.
Rental cars are just one of the options if you are planning to travel off-WDW property. Many folks like to add in a trip to Sea World on their vacation. In fact, this week Tips from the Disney Diva answered a question about shuttles from WDW to Sea World - Orlando. While rental cars can be an expensive option, it may also be an option for you or your family to rent a car for just one day. There are car rental properties on site at the Swan and Dolphin, as well as at the Car Care Center just outside the Magic Kingdom, that rent for approximately $30 a day .
You may also take a Mears Shuttle from WDW to SeaWorld. The shuttle runs about $16 per person round trip. For more information you can check out: http://www.mearstransportation.com/. Children 4-11 get a child's rate and those 3 and under are free. Just call them 24 hours in advance to schedule. Oh, and they are cash only, so take that into consideration!
Taxis are another option. Taxis run about $30 each way to and from WDW to Sea World.
By far, the least expensive option is the city bus. The city buses are called Lynx in Orlando and their website is: http://www.golynx.com. This website will allow you to check the bus schedule. Keep in mind, buses make stops, so your traveling time may vary. Some folks report a 20 minute trip from WDW to Sea World via Downtown Disney for $2 per person each way. Other folks say the trip may be more like 30-40 minutes. The bus stop at the TTC is sometimes slow loading and makes a stop at Downtown Disney along the way. The bus stop at the Downtown Disney lot is on the west side near the overflow parking lot. You will want to ask the driver to drop you off at the front gate to SeaWorld otherwise you might be in for an extra walk.
