I’ll be honest, when asked to review one of the Unofficial Guidebooks I was a little skeptical as I am a seasoned Disney visitor, visiting multiple times a year, an Annual Passholder and Disney Vacation Club owner. I wondered what really could someone like myself gain from reading this book as I never really used a guide book before to plan a Disney vacation. However, I will start off by saying I really enjoyed this color companion, so I think I picked the right book for me to review!
Hopefully you’ve been following along with our reviews of the Unofficial Guidebooks, as my review of The Color Companion to Walt Disney World goes along with Jolly Frogger Diva’s review of The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World. This companion guide offers photos galore to the 850 guide to Walt Disney World, however you can plan your trip alone with this book. There is an abundance of information contained in this guide, way more than I thought would ever be in it and it’s a very easy read.
Maps for the South Orlando and Walt Disney World Area, Walt Disney World, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios are included in this guide.
Introduction – A little bit of Disney history to help you win at your next game of Disney trivia.
This section is full of useful planning information. Throughout the section you will find “Unofficial Tips” which I loved. I would definitely make note of these Unofficial Tips. One of my favorite visual pictures in this planning section is while discussing touring the parks, it shows the crowds at 9 am, 11 am and 1 pm. This really allows the reader to see why the authors are stressing to get to the parks early. There are details on how to make your FastPass+ reservations, choose your parks, make the most of your time and money, tips for special groups of people and how to travel the Disney transportation system. All the information contained in this introduction section is very useful and handy while planning and setting up your trip.
Choosing where to stay is one of the first and hardest decisions one has to make when planning a Disney vacation. This section describes every single Disney resort. The visual at the beginning of the section showing the different in room sizes for value, moderate and deluxe really shows the reader you get what you pay for. Each hotel review contains strengths and weaknesses of the hotel along with pictures. And really, who doesn’t want to see pictures of where they want to stay? Having the visuals definitely can help narrow down your decision on which resort is right for you.
Part Three: Walt Disney World with Kids
The Unofficial Team has a whole book on this section, which you can read our review here. This section not only prepares you for your vacation with your kids, it gives you tips to help you enjoy your vacation. There is a whole section discussing scary rides and what to expect. This is very helpful for first time visitors who may not know anything about a certain ride and can either prepare children or avoid the attraction altogether if it may frighten their child. Next is a list of where you can meet your favorite characters by park, which is a handy reference to make note of when making priorities for each park. Character meals are discussed with ratings, location, meals served in a handy chart to compare all the character meals offered.
Part Four: Dining in Walt Disney World
Not only do the authors go into detail the differences in each type of restaurant Disney has to offer, they explain how to make advance reservations, the dress code, no show fees… basically anything you need to know about Disney dining. A comprehensive list of every full service Disney restaurant is in this section including hours, type of restaurant, price range… you know anything and everything you need to know about the restaurants!
Part Five: The Magic Kingdom
Part Six: Epcot
Part Seven: Animal Kingdom
Part Eight: Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Part Nine: The Water Parks
The next four sections provide an in-depth review of each of Disney’s four theme parks. Part Nine does the same thing except for the two Disney water parks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. The section starts with a map of the theme park highlighting attractions, table service and counter service restaurants. A ride review is included with a star rating, age appeal, ride description telling what it is, when to go, height restrictions, author’s rating, duration, average wait time, loading speed and of course pictures! You’ll find information on counter service restaurants offered with a description of what is served. The amount of information the author’s provide is unbelievable. They really did their job in providing the reader with the most comprehensive detailed explanation for everything possible!
Part Ten: Disney Springs and Disney’s Boardwalk
Disney Springs was recently renovated and this section gives you an overview of the shops and dining now offered at the Marketplace, Landing, Town Center and West Side of Disney Springs. The same description of shops and dining is offered for Disney’s Boardwalk.
Besides the theme parks and shopping Disney, does offer a variety of recreational activities which you can learn about in this section including boating, fishing, horseback riding, and golf to name a few.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed reading the Unofficial Guide The Color Companion to Walt Disney World. If you are a visual person and would like to see parts of Walt Disney World learning as you are planning your trip, I would recommend this guide to you. It will not disappoint!
