Most quick service/counter service dining options at Walt Disney World feature either hamburgers or pizza. Because of the limited menu’s, when you frequent counter service restaurants at Walt Disney World, it can become a bit monotonous. There is a counter service dining option that, while the menu does boast cheeseburgers and hot dogs, it also offers something unique in the form of other-world ambiance. What dining service could I be talking about? None other than Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.
Fitting into the surroundings of Tomorrowland, Cosmic Ray’s is designed with a futuristic feel. The counters are separated into three different Bay’s, each featuring a variety of menu items. The bay’s make the flow of traffic much easier to navigate. There are also a few menu items that make Cosmic Ray’s a little more desirable than most counter service restaurants. You can find a delicious pulled pork sandwich here for lunch, and for dinner, the menu has the popular 1/2 Rotisserie Chicken and a Pulled Pork Platter. My husband has always been fond of the 1/2 Rotisserie Chicken.
There are a couple of other perks that make dining at Cosmic Ray’s an experience a cut above other quick service restaurants. To begin with, Cosmic Ray’s has a toppings bar. Who doesn’t love to visit a toppings bar and add all those extra yummy goodies to their meal? With items such as sautéed onions and mushrooms, crispy fried onions, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles, there are enough toppings to give your meal an extra punch. They made sure to have enough stations that diners don’t have to wait to get to the toppings, which is always a good thing! As usual, Disney also makes sure there are enough Cast Members to keep the toppings replenished at all times, never running out.
We decided on our last trip that we wanted to take full advantage of that toppings bar, so we both ordered the Angus Bacon Cheeseburger and french fries. The burgers were cooked to perfection, and all they yummy toppings made them perfect. We also took advantage of the new to 2018 Disney Dining Plan option of ordering a specialty drink instead of the usual soda. We both ordered the Strawberry Lemonade Slushy, and it is seriously so good!
Another popular feature at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café comes in the form of musical entertainment. I don’t mean your average, every day house band. I’m talking about a crooner who is known not just world-wide, but galaxy wide. That’s because this particular singer is from another planet, New Nork on the planet Zork to be precise. That’s right, the guy up there singing his life away in front of the crowd of diners is an alien! Okay, not a REAL alien, he’s actually an audio animatronic.
His show lasts about twenty-five minutes, but don’t worry if you walked in on the end of his show, it’s on a loop so you get to enjoy it again and again. He even has background singers to aid him. Of course, you can’t actually see the background singers, but you can hear them. Sonny Eclipse is a great treat for the youngsters as well as adults. His show is really actually cute, even if it is played on a loop.
Another great feature about Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café is mobile ordering. We took advantage of using the mobile order feature on our last trip, and trust me when I say, this is a HUGE time saver. We were able to place our order on our My Disney Experience app. Using the app, we let them know when we were there, and in no time at all our order was ready to pick up. The pick up counter for mobile ordering is also very clearly marked so there is no confusion on where you need to go.
If you are still worried about whether or not you would enjoy the food at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café, check out the full menu here. In my opinion, there seems to be a good variety to choose from and should be enough options for everyone to enjoy something there. Another indicator that the restaurant actually has very good food is the fact that, even though there are plenty of seats and tables, every time we have been, the place has been packed. Word is out that Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café is out of this world!
